The Cotton Bowl Classic is a college football bowl game in America that has been played annually since January 1, 1937. It is currently held in Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Originally, the game was played at Cotton Bowl Stadium then moved to AT&T Stadium in Arlington in 2010.
The game used to host Southwest Conference (SWC) champion playing against a team from any part of the country – mostly from a runner-up in Southeastern Conference. Between 1999 and 2014, the game hosted runner-up from Big 12 Conference against SEC team. Since 2014, Cotton Bowl Classic has been one of the six bowls in College Football Playoff.

A notable event in the history of Cotton Bowl Classic happened in 1940 when Clemson, an underdog team, beat Boston College Eagles 6-3 in their first appearance. The South West Conference (SWC) champion hosted Cotton Bowl Classic from 1941 t0 1994. Another surprise was pulled by Texas Longhorns who represented the SWC against a stronger Georgia Tech team in 1943. Texas defeated Georgia 14-7. Texas would later appear in 22 cotton Bowls, the highest number of appearances for any team.
The first interracial game at Cotton Bowl Stadium was played in 1948 between Penn State and Dallas SMU. The Penn State team stayed in a Naval Air Station situated 14 miles from Dallas because no hotel would offer accommodation to two African-American players in the team.
The most famous game was played in 1954. Dickey Moegle of Rice started running into the open field from his side’s 5-yard line. Tommy Lewis of Alabama tackled him from the bench. The referee went on to signal touchdown at 42-yard line despite having seen what had happened.
Syracuse beat Texas 23-14 in 1960 to win the national championship. Syracuse was led by Ernie Davis. There was a fight before the end of first half as Texas was accused of dirty game. However, the claims were attributed to be from media and dropped. Davis was the first African-America to win the Heisman Trophy.
In 1964, Texas defeated Navy to complete an undefeated season. It was 6 weeks after J.F. Kennedy’s assassination. It was also the second time in college football history a No. 1 was pairing with a No. 2, after the Rose Bowl in 1963.
In 1969, Texas continued with their new Wishbone offensive formation. They had defeated all opponents in 1968 season. They won the SWC crown again after defeating Tennessee Volunteers 36-13.
